Woodbridge Primary School invited local authoress, Wendy Maartens, to talk to the grade 7s. She brought three everyday objects with her and spoke about dreaming up, or recalling stories behind them: an egg-lifter (Who had cooked with it?), a child’s shoe, found on the beach (Who lost it? Could she have been a refugee?); an old family photo, with all the emotions it evokes.

Wendy spoke about our lives being a bit like books, each day a fresh page. The school hopes that the creative writing of the grade 7s will be impacted by this encounter with a generous, talented and brave lady. Wendy hid her bald head under an elegant hat. She goes to a barber once a fortnight to have her “chemo-fluff” hair shaved.
Wendy has nearly 40 books to her name, with many also translated into English and Xhosa.
